Blending Buildings is an infinite atlas of non-existing constructions. Its aim is to show how AI can reinforce the foundational architectural process of observing, reworking, and producing. By generating new reference images and exploring uncharted conceptual territories, AI allows the imagining of architectures never previously conceived. At the same time, this abstraction raises questions about the value and meaning of what such blendization produces.
The project seeks to build awareness of the opportunities and risks that AI introduces into architectural practice. It invites debate on developments occurring not only in studios and universities but inside the servers and networks driving today’s digital revolutions. Awareness means acknowledging change and accepting its consequences, positive or negative. Architects must therefore ask themselves whether these tools and processes genuinely support architectural thinking.
The Blending Buildings in this publication depict structures from the Swiss architectural landscape—from vernacular elements like the raccards of Grimentz and Sgraffito houses of the Lower Engadine to contemporary buildings in Zurich’s Europaallee. These structures have been mixed and fused by AI programs, generating new forms that question how imagination and design-making might shift with such tools.
For us, Blending Buildings represent an invitation to reflect on how to navigate this era of rapid transformation. They suggest that today’s contradictions have produced an extraordinarily powerful design instrument—one capable of illuminating the uncertainty of contemporary life. The question is not whether we are lost, but whether we can guide change consciously rather than be unintentionally overtaken by it.
